Bengaluru: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Kodagu district on June 12 and 13, warning of extremely heavy rainfall accompanied by gusty winds reaching speeds of 50 to 60 kmph.

The alert extends to other districts: Shivamogga, Chikkamagaluru, and Hassan as well.

According to the IMD’s forecast, on June 12, heavy to very heavy rain is likely to occur at a few places in Kodagu, while one or two locations may experience extremely heavy rainfall coupled with strong winds. A similar forecast has been issued for June 13, with the same districts expected to witness intense downpours and gusty winds.

In the lead-up to the red alert, a yellow alert has been issued for Kodagu on June 10 and 11, indicating the possibility of moderate to heavy rainfall.

The IMD has attributed the inclement weather to several synoptic meteorological factors. The Northern Limit of the Monsoon currently extends across parts of the Arabian Sea and central India, including Mumbai and Adilabad, signalling the gradual advance of the southwest monsoon. Additionally, an upper air cyclonic circulation persists over the southeast and adjoining east-central Bay of Bengal, between 5.8 and 7.6 km above mean sea level. A trough also extends from north Tamil Nadu to the south Maharashtra coast, passing through interior Karnataka at a height of 3.1 to 4.5 km above mean sea level.

Authorities have advised residents in Kodagu and other affected districts to remain alert and avoid travel during periods of intense rainfall.
