Madikeri/Bengaluru: A red alert has been issued for Kodagu district from 8.30 a.m. on Thursday, June 26, to 8.30 a.m. on Friday, June 27, as the region braces for very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.

According to the Bengaluru Meteorological Centre, Kodagu is likely to receive intense rainfall with sustained wind speeds of 50–60 kmph over the next 24 hours. The IMD has also forecast heavy rainfall for neighbouring districts including Shivamogga, Chikkamagaluru and Hassan.

The situation is part of a broader pattern of strong monsoon activity over South Interior Karnataka. For Day 1 (June 26), the IMD has warned of widespread rainfall across the region, with extremely heavy rain possible at isolated locations in Kodagu district. The weather department has advised residents to remain cautious, especially in low-lying areas prone to flooding and landslides.

The intensity of the rain is expected to reduce slightly on Day 2 (June 27), with a forecast of heavy rain continuing over Kodagu, Chikkamagaluru, Hassan and Shivamogga. By Day 3 (June 28), Kodagu is expected to receive moderate to heavy rain at isolated places, but high wind speeds (40–50 kmph) will persist.

Rainfall activity is expected to gradually ease from June 29 onwards, with light to moderate showers likely in Kodagu and across South Interior Karnataka through July 2. However, winds will remain strong, and authorities have urged residents to stay alert.

In previous years, such weather patterns have triggered landslides in high-altitude areas like Talacauvery, Bhagamandala, and Madikeri. Disaster response teams are likely to be kept on standby as a precaution.

In Bengaluru and other parts of the southern interior, including Mysuru, Mandya, and Kolar, moderate rainfall is predicted for the next few days, with wind speeds touching 50–60 kmph. While Bengaluru city is forecast to have cloudy skies and intermittent showers, the IMD has not issued any weather warning for the capital.
