Kushalnagar: In a move aimed at preserving the fragile ecosystem of Kodagu’s forest areas, the Forest Department has enforced a ban on plastic at several popular tourist destinations in the district starting June 1.
The ban covers Dubare Elephant Camp, Cauvery Nisargadhama, Harangi Elephant Camp — all of which are located under the Kushalnagar Zone of the Forest Department. Visitors to these eco-sensitive zones will no longer be allowed to carry plastic items such as water bottles, plastic bags, and packaged food wrappers.
Kushalnagar Range Forest Officer Ratan Kumar said the ban is part of an initiative to reduce pollution and protect wildlife from the harmful effects of plastic waste. “We have implemented a strict ban on plastic usage at these sites. Anyone found violating the rule will be fined ₹100,” he said.
With thousands of tourists visiting these spots every month, officials say plastic waste had become a major concern, choking natural streams and posing a threat to animals. Awareness signboards have been put up and staff have been instructed to conduct regular checks at entry points.
The Forest Department has urged tourists to carry reusable bags and water bottles, and to dispose of waste responsibly. Local vendors and shopkeepers around these areas have also been asked to avoid selling items in plastic packaging.
