Virajpet: More than 30 wild elephants were spotted roaming inside estate boundaries in Badaga Banangala village, sparking concern among locals. The incident surfaced after the Forest Department launched an operation to drive the elephants back into the forest, following repeated complaints of elephant intrusion from residents and estate owners.
Villagers and plantation growers had reported an unusual spike in elephant activity in recent weeks. Acting on these grievances, personnel from the Thithimathi forest division commenced a coordinated drive to push the herds away from human settlements. During the operation, foresters discovered over 30 elephants gathered within the estates and nearby village areas.
The task proved challenging as heavy rain had left the ground wet and slippery, making movement difficult. Despite these conditions, the teams successfully guided several herds towards the forest. However, officials noted that some groups, particularly those with calves, refused to move from the estates.
The drive was led by Range Forest Officer (RFO) Gangadhar, supported by his team. A Rapid Response Team has been stationed in the area to monitor the remaining elephants and track their movements.
