BENGALURU: Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Wednesday announced that no excise duty would be levied on army canteens in the State, reaffirming his government’s commitment to the welfare of serving and retired soldiers.
He was speaking at Jai Hind Sabha, a programme held in Bengaluru to honour members of the Indian armed forces and felicitate retired military personnel. “Soldiers, like farmers, doctors, and teachers, are to be respected as much as our own parents. Their dedication and sacrifice for the nation’s defence is unparalleled,” he said.
Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, who also attended the event, said the government is actively considering the creation of a dedicated corporation to support the welfare of ex-servicemen in Karnataka. “This proposal will soon be placed before the Cabinet for discussion and approval,” he added.
More than a thousand senior army officers, veterans, and families of martyred soldiers participated in the event, which was organised by the Congress. Several senior officials were felicitated for their service to the nation.
