Madikeri: The Environment and Health Foundation of India has raised concerns over the growing trend of illegal land conversion for commercial purposes in Kodagu district.
In a press statement, the organisation stated that the Karnataka High Court has banned the conversion of jamma bane, sagu land, paddy fields, and coffee plantations for non-agricultural or commercial use. The order was issued under the provisions of the Karnataka Land Revenue Act, 1964.
Colonel (retd) C.P. Muthanna, representing the foundation, said, “The Karnataka High Court issued an order banning the conversion of jamma bane, sagu land, paddy fields, and coffee plantations in Kodagu district for commercial purposes as per the Karnataka Land Revenue Act 1964.”
He cautioned residents against purchasing such lands for development or investment, pointing out that those engaging in illegal transactions could face financial losses. “We urge people not to buy these lands, as such conversions are unlawful and any investment in them may lead to legal and monetary consequences,” he said.
The statement comes amid increasing concerns over deforestation, ecological imbalance, and disputes arising from illegal land transactions in Kodagu, a region known for its fragile ecosystem and coffee plantations.
