MADIKERI: The southwest monsoon continued to bring rainfall across Kodagu on Wednesday, although the showers were milder and less intense than those recorded over the past three days. However, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Kodagu on Thursday, May 29, anticipating heavy to very heavy rainfall in parts of the district.
As per official data, the district received 62.67 mm of rain in the 24-hour period ending at 8.30 a.m. on Wednesday, slightly lower than the 76.82 mm recorded the previous day. Yet, isolated areas experienced intense downpours. Shanthalli in Somwarpet taluk recorded a whopping 175 mm of rainfall, making it one of the wettest spots in the district.

Other significant rainfall figures include Bhagamandala in Madikeri taluk with 103 mm, Hudikeri in Ponnampet taluk with 66 mm, and Srimangala with 61 mm. The cumulative rainfall in Kodagu from January 1, 2025, to date stands at 806.21 mm, a sharp rise compared to 447.77 mm during the same period last year.
Meanwhile, district authorities led by Deputy Commissioner Venkataraja visited Banangala village, where a resident tragically died after a tree fell on him amid Tuesday’s rain and wind. The administration presented a compensation cheque of ₹5 lakh to the bereaved family.
The continuing rainfall in the Bhagamandala region has increased the water inflow into major reservoirs. The Krishnaraja Sagar (KRS) dam saw its inflow surge to 26,424 cusecs on Wednesday, up from 19,129 cusecs on Tuesday, while the Kabini reservoir’s inflow rose to 23,407 cusecs, compared to 21,946 cusecs a day earlier.
