MLA Ponnanna Urges Kodava Youth to Preserve Language and Culture


Ponnanna was speaking at an event marking the 157th birth anniversary of Haradasa Appacha Kavi, organised by the Karnataka Kodava Sahitya Academy.

Bhagamandala: Virajpet MLA and Chief Minister’s Legal Advisor, A.S. Ponnanna, has called on Kodava youths to contribute to the growth of the Kodava language and literature. He also emphasized the importance of unity within the Kodava community to preserve their cultural heritage and propagate the ideas of renowned poet Haradasa Appaneravanda Appacha Kavi.


Ponnanna was speaking at an event marking the 157th birth anniversary of Haradasa Appacha Kavi, organised by the Karnataka Kodava Sahitya Academy on Saturday at Kodava Samaja Bengnad, Cherambane. In his speech, he highlighted the significant contributions of Appacha Kavi to Kodava literature and urged the community to come together to safeguard their unique language, art, and cultural identity.


"Haradasa Appacha Kavi’s works are evergreen, and his notable contributions to Kodava language and literature should inspire the younger generation. Kodavas must unite to save our art, literature, and culture," Ponnanna said.

Haradasa Appacha Kavi, born on September 21, 1868, was not only a poet but also a social reformer. His poems and plays, written in the 19th century, reflected his deep understanding of Kodava culture and social issues. His works, drawn from his own experiences and extensive studies of the Kodava community, remain relevant to this day. Appacha Kavi's legacy earned him the title of 'Amarakavi' (Immortal Poet) for his profound impact on Kodava literature and social reform.


Also speaking at the event, Kodagu MLC Suja Kushalappa praised Kodava culture, language, and art as being unique in India. He emphasized the need for sustained efforts to protect this rich cultural heritage.


The event also honoured Kodava historian and scholar Bachiraniyanda P. Appanna and literary figure Chiramana Vani Changamaiah for their contributions to the preservation of Kodava language and history.


Ajjinikanda Mahesh Nachaiah, President of the Karnataka Kodava Sahitya Academy, along with other members of the academy, was present at the occasion, reinforcing the community’s commitment to promoting Kodava culture and literature.
