Madikeri: Karnataka Minister for minor irrigation and Kodagu district in-charge N.S. Boseraju has instructed Deputy Commissioner Venkat Raja to submit a detailed report on the rain-induced damage in the district.
Speaking to reporters at Harangi on Thursday after inspecting several flood-affected areas, the Minister assured that the matter would be tabled at the Cabinet meeting scheduled for July 2, with financial assistance to be approved based on the findings.
Mr. Boseraju noted that Kodagu has remained under red alert for several days, with continuous rainfall causing extensive damage to infrastructure including roads, bridges, and houses. “Thankfully, there has been no loss of life due to proactive precautionary steps,” he stated.

While acknowledging the importance of rainfall in Kodagu for the water security of southern Karnataka, the Minister emphasised that the intensity of the current monsoon has severely impacted the district. “In the upcoming Karnataka Development Programme (KDP) meeting, we will review the damage to homes, roads, and public infrastructure. Immediate relief measures and long-term solutions will be discussed,” he said.
He added that while earlier relief fund distribution depended on fixed criteria, funds would now be allocated based on actual damage assessments. “Officials have been asked to submit the report at the earliest. It will be discussed with the Chief Minister, Revenue Minister, and departmental secretaries to ensure swift allocation of resources,” he said.
Commenting on the closure of the Ramaswamy Kanive hanging bridge between Kushalnagar and Periyapatna, Mr. Boseraju said steps were being taken, in consultation with Animal Husbandry Minister K. Venkatesh, to reopen the structure.

Earlier in the day, the Minister, joined by Madikeri MLA Mantar Gowda, reviewed the swelling Cauvery river and visited damaged sites, including a hanging bridge at Kushalnagar, a bridge near Rangasamudra, and the home of a local resident named Chandrashekhar.
He noted that this year’s monsoon arrived unusually early, in late May, leading to significant destruction. With more rain forecast in the coming weeks, he instructed officials to remain vigilant in flood-prone regions.
Boseraju said the district currently has adequate funds in its Personal Deposit account for emergency response and has already disbursed compensation to affected families. Permanent repair and rebuilding work will begin once the monsoon recedes.
