Madikeri: The early arrival of the monsoon in the first week of June brought initial relief to Kodagu district with moderate to heavy showers. However, the past week has seen a significant reduction in rainfall, with showers becoming sporadic and scattered.
From June 1 to June 15, Kodagu has recorded 146.44 mm of rain, falling 23 percent short of the average for this time frame, as reported by The Hindu. This deficit has placed Kodagu, a vital source region for the Cauvery River, into the category of a rainfall-deficit district.
Although the recent decrease in rainfall has raised concerns, meteorologists remain hopeful. "It's still early in the season, and we anticipate an increase in monsoon activity soon," stated an official from the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
The IMD highlighted that monsoon activity across the state has been weak, a sentiment echoed by the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC), which described rainfall distribution as "isolated." During the 24-hour period ending at 8:30 a.m. on Sunday, only 6 percent of the rain gauge stations at Gram Panchayats recorded more than 2.5 mm of rainfall.
Rainfall has been labeled as isolated in regions including Kodagu, Hassan, Mysuru, and Ramanagara, while Chamarajanagar and Mandya have been classified as dry by the KSNDMC. This uneven distribution of rain is causing anxiety among farmers and residents who depend on the monsoon for agriculture and water resources.
As the monsoon season progresses, residents and authorities alike are watching weather patterns closely, hoping for a resurgence in rainfall to counteract the current deficit and secure water supplies for the district.
