MADIKERI: Coffee prices saw a marginal dip across Karnataka’s major coffee-growing districts as on May 26, according to the latest update from the Karnataka Planters’ Association. Robusta Parchment was quoted between ₹20,000 and ₹20,500 per 50 kg bag, while Robusta Cherry ranged from ₹10,800 to ₹11,800—slightly lower than last week’s averages.
Arabica Parchment, known for its smooth profile and higher market demand, was priced between ₹25,500 and ₹26,500 per 50 kg, and Arabica Cherry traded between ₹14,300 and ₹16,000. While the prices remain comparatively high, growers say they have slipped marginally due to subdued export demand and market corrections. Pepper, a key intercrop in coffee plantations, held steady at ₹690 per kg.
Karnataka continues to dominate India’s coffee production, contributing over 70% of the national output. The coffee districts of Chikkamagaluru, Kodagu (Coorg), and Hassan are known for producing high-quality beans under shaded canopies, often alongside spices like pepper and cardamom.
Chikkamagaluru, regarded as the cradle of Indian coffee, is noted for its Arabica plantations that thrive in higher elevations. Kodagu remains the state’s largest coffee-producing district, specialising in Robusta, while Hassan supports a mix of both varieties and has a strong network of small and medium growers.
Planters across these regions are keeping a close watch on international prices and weather conditions. Although pre-monsoon rains have arrived on time, ensuring healthy flowering, concerns over rising costs and labour shortages continue to weigh on profitability.
