Madikeri/Chikkamagaluru/Hassan: Karnataka remains the undisputed leader in coffee production in India, contributing nearly 70% of the country’s total output. The state’s major coffee-growing districts — Kodagu (Coorg), Chikkamagaluru, and Hassan — together form the heart of India’s coffee belt.

Kodagu alone accounts for more than one-third of national production, known for its high-quality Robusta beans, while the misty hills of Chikkamagaluru and Hassan produce premium Arabica. Blessed with rich soil, heavy monsoon rains, and shaded plantations, these regions not only sustain thousands of growers but also define Karnataka’s reputation as the coffee capital of India.

Coffee has been an integral part of India’s agricultural and cultural landscape for centuries. The story of Indian coffee began in the 17th century when the revered Sufi saint, Baba Budan, is believed to have smuggled seven coffee beans from Yemen and planted them on the hills of Chikkamagaluru in Karnataka. These hills, now known as the Baba Budan Giri range, became the birthplace of Indian coffee cultivation.

Karnataka today contributes nearly 70% of India’s coffee production, with Kodagu (Coorg), Chikkamagaluru, and Hassan being the primary growing regions. Kodagu alone accounts for over one-third of the nation’s total output, earning it the title ‘Coffee Cup of India.’ The region’s undulating terrain, rich soil, and heavy monsoon rainfall make it ideal for growing both Arabica and Robusta varieties.

Arabica coffee, known for its mild flavour and aromatic qualities, thrives in the higher elevations of Chikkamagaluru and Hassan, while Robusta, with its stronger taste and higher caffeine content, dominates the lower altitudes of Kodagu. The intercropping of coffee with pepper, cardamom, and orange not only adds to the biodiversity of these plantations but also enhances the livelihoods of small and medium growers.

India’s shade-grown coffee stands out globally for its unique taste profile, sustainability, and harmony with forest ecosystems. Indian coffee exports reach over 100 countries, with Europe being the largest market.

Beyond its economic importance, coffee culture is deeply ingrained in Karnataka’s identity. From the traditional filter coffee served in homes to global recognition through specialty blends, Indian coffee continues to blend tradition, community, and commerce—brewing a rich legacy that began in the misty hills of Karnataka centuries ago.
