New Delhi: Pepper production in Kodagu district is expected to witness a significant rise in the coming year, the Union Government informed the Lok Sabha.

Raising the issue in Parliament, Kodagu Mysuru MP Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wadiyar sought details from the Centre on the current status of pepper cultivation in Kodagu, the growth in exports, and the measures taken to support growers. He also asked whether the government was considering any revision of the Minimum Import Price (MIP) for pepper.

Responding to the question, Union minister Jitin Prasada stated that pepper production in Kodagu is projected to increase by about 16% in the 2025–26 crop year compared to the previous year.

The Minister also noted that India’s pepper exports have recorded steady growth. According to official data, pepper exports from the country rose by 14.72%, touching USD 101.45 million.

To support pepper growers, the government has been implementing initiatives under the SPICED Scheme. Through this programme, farmers are provided assistance in the form of modern cultivation tools, training programmes, and improved market linkages to enhance productivity and export opportunities.

The government has also retained a Minimum Import Price of ₹500 per kilogram on pepper imports to protect domestic farmers from cheaper imports.

Kodagu, often referred to as Coorg, is one of India’s prominent pepper-growing regions. Pepper is traditionally cultivated in the district as an intercrop in coffee plantations, where the vines grow on shade trees such as silver oak. The region’s climate and forested landscape provide ideal conditions for producing high-quality pepper, which is widely traded in domestic and international markets.
