The history of coffee cultivation in Karnataka dates back to the 17th century when Baba Budan, a Sufi saint, introduced coffee seeds from Yemen to the region. This marked the beginning of coffee cultivation in India, with Karnataka becoming the epicenter of the country's coffee industry. Over the centuries, the state's coffee estates have evolved, blending traditional methods with modern agricultural practices to enhance productivity and quality.

Kodagu, Chikkamagaluru, and Hassan are three of Karnataka’s most renowned coffee-growing regions, forming the backbone of India’s coffee industry. Kodagu, often referred to as the “Coffee Capital of India,” is famed for its sprawling estates nestled in lush hills, where both Arabica and Robusta beans thrive under the region’s ideal climate and fertile soil. Arabica from Kodagu is prized for its mild flavor and aromatic qualities, while Robusta is valued for its strong body and higher caffeine content.

Chikkamagaluru, the birthplace of coffee cultivation in India, has a deep historical significance. Coffee was introduced here in the 17th century by Baba Budan, a Sufi saint who brought seeds from Yemen. The region’s plantations are known for producing high-quality Arabica, often grown under shaded forests that help preserve biodiversity.

Hassan district contributes significantly to Karnataka’s coffee output, especially Robusta. Its hilly terrain and consistent rainfall create favorable conditions for coffee cultivation. Across these regions, traditional farming practices coexist with modern methods, ensuring sustainability and quality. Collectively, Kodagu, Chikkamagaluru, and Hassan not only drive India’s coffee exports but also maintain the rich heritage and culture associated with coffee production, making Karnataka synonymous with premium Indian coffee.
