Virajpet/Madikeri: Karnataka continues to dominate India’s coffee sector, accounting for close to 70% of the country’s total production. The districts of Kodagu (Coorg), Chikkamagaluru and Hassan together constitute the core of India’s coffee-growing belt, shaping both output and quality standards nationwide.

Among them, Kodagu stands out, contributing over one-third of India’s coffee production. The district is particularly known for its robust and high-quality Robusta beans, while the cooler, mist-covered hills of Chikkamagaluru and Hassan are renowned for producing premium Arabica coffee. Fertile soil, abundant monsoon rainfall and traditional shade-grown plantations have helped sustain thousands of coffee growers and cement Karnataka’s status as India’s coffee capital.

As of 17 January 2026 the latest coffee EP price in Kodagu is Robusta Cherry EP-375 (Spot lift), Arabica Cherry- ₹14200 (Per bag).

Coffee has deep historical roots in India, dating back several centuries. The origins of Indian coffee cultivation are traced to the 17th century, when the Sufi saint Baba Budan is believed to have brought seven coffee beans from Yemen and planted them in the hills of Chikkamagaluru. These hills, later known as the Baba Budan Giri, became the cradle of coffee farming in the country.

Today, Karnataka’s dominance in coffee production remains unmatched, with Kodagu, Chikkamagaluru and Hassan continuing to lead both in volume and reputation. Kodagu’s favourable topography, nutrient-rich soil and heavy rainfall have earned it the epithet ‘Coffee Cup of India’, reinforcing its central role in the nation’s coffee economy.
