Madikeri: Karnataka continues to dominate India’s coffee landscape, contributing nearly 70% of the country’s total coffee production. The state’s coffee cultivation is concentrated in Kodagu, Chikkamagaluru, and Hassan districts, which together account for the lion’s share of output. Kodagu alone produces over one-third of India’s coffee, making it the single largest coffee-producing district in the country. Chikkamagaluru, the birthplace of coffee in India, and Hassan also remain key hubs, sustaining both Robusta and Arabica varieties.

As per the latest market data, Robusta Parchment is trading between ₹17,500 and ₹18,500, Robusta Cherry between ₹11,500 and ₹12,750, Arabica Parchment between ₹27,000 and ₹28,000, and Arabica Cherry between ₹14,000 and ₹16,300. Pepper, which is often cultivated as an intercrop in coffee plantations, is priced at ₹675 per kilogram.

India, as a whole, produces around 3.5 lakh tonnes of coffee annually, with approximately 70% of this output exported to more than 120 countries. The European Union remains the largest importer, taking in close to 60% of India’s green coffee exports. Despite the strong export market, domestic price updates like the latest one are closely tracked by growers as they influence their day-to-day decisions on harvesting and sales.

Growers in Kodagu and Chikkamagaluru note that while Arabica prices remain attractive, production challenges such as erratic rainfall, labour shortages, and rising input costs continue to affect margins. Robusta, widely grown in Kodagu, has witnessed comparatively stable demand, especially from international buyers. Pepper, an important supplementary crop, also plays a crucial role in stabilising farmer incomes when coffee markets face volatility.
