Latest Coffee And Pepper Prices From Karnataka’s Key Growing Regions: Kodagu, Chikkamagaluru, And Hassan

MADIKERI: Here are the coffee prices across major varieties as of Thursday, offering some predictability to growers in Karnataka’s prime coffee-producing regions — Kodagu, Chikkamagaluru, and Hassan, according to the Karnataka Coffee Planters' Association.

As of May 22, Arabica parchment was trading between ₹25,500 and ₹26,200 per 50 kg bag, while Arabica cherry fetched ₹14,250 to ₹16,000. In the Robusta segment, parchment ranged from ₹20,300 to ₹20,700, and cherry from ₹11,100 to ₹12,000 per 50 kg.

Prices for black pepper, another key crop in these hilly districts, stood at ₹690 per kg.

Karnataka is the largest coffee-producing state in India, contributing over 70% of the country’s total output. The state’s coffee cultivation is concentrated in the hilly regions of Kodagu, Chikkamagaluru, and Hassan, where the unique combination of altitude, rainfall, and shade-grown farming practices fosters high-quality beans.

Kodagu (Coorg) alone accounts for more than one-third of India’s coffee production, primarily growing Robusta varieties under dense forest cover. Chikkamagaluru, considered the birthplace of Indian coffee, is known for its premium Arabica beans grown at higher elevations. Hassan complements this output with both Arabica and Robusta plantations, often intercropped with pepper, cardamom, and arecanut.

Coffee in Karnataka is typically grown on small to medium-sized family-owned estates. The cultivation is largely rain-fed and shade-grown, making it environmentally sustainable. Traditional practices, combined with modern techniques, have allowed Karnataka’s coffee to gain recognition in international markets.

Besides supporting the rural economy, the sector provides employment to thousands of workers, including seasonal labourers during harvest time. Despite challenges like fluctuating prices, labour shortages, and climate-related stresses, coffee remains a vital crop in Karnataka — both economically and culturally.
