Madikeri: In recent months, coffee prices across India have witnessed a significant downturn, undoing the earlier highs seen during periods of limited supply. Industry reports indicate that Robusta prices have declined by nearly 30%, while Arabica prices have dropped by around 17%.
This downward trend is largely attributed to a bumper harvest in Brazil, which has eased global supply constraints and put downward pressure on international market prices.
Here are the latest commodity rates from key coffee-growing regions of Karnataka:
Arabica Parchment: ₹26,000–₹27,000
↑ ₹100
Arabica Cherry: ₹14,000–₹15,100

Coffee cultivation in Karnataka: History and present scenario
Karnataka is India’s largest coffee-producing state, accounting for nearly 70% of the country’s total coffee output. The major coffee-producing districts are Kodagu (Coorg), Chikkamagaluru, Hassan, and parts of Sakleshpur—each playing a vital role in shaping the coffee economy of India.
Kodagu (Coorg)
Kodagu tops the list with over 40% of India’s total coffee production. The district predominantly grows Robusta, although Arabica is also cultivated in some higher altitude regions. Known for its plantation culture and scenic hills, Kodagu's coffee estates are intercropped with pepper and are managed by both small growers and large estates.
Chikkamagaluru
Often hailed as the birthplace of Indian coffee, legend has it that Baba Budan, a 17th-century Sufi saint, smuggled seven coffee beans from Yemen and planted them in the Baba Budangiri hills. Chikkamagaluru produces both Arabica and Robusta, with a preference for the former due to its elevation.
Hassan
Hassan is another major coffee-producing district known for high-quality Arabica grown in the Sakleshpur belt. The cooler climate and rich soil here contribute to aromatic and well-bodied beans, popular among exporters and domestic roasters alike.
Overall, Karnataka’s coffee production has evolved with better post-harvest processing methods, increasing participation from younger generations of growers, and a focus on sustainability. However, fluctuating prices, erratic rainfall, labour shortages, and pest issues continue to challenge farmers across these regions.
