MADIKERI: The Karnataka Planters Association has released the latest commodity prices for coffee and pepper across major coffee-growing regions in the state. The rates, effective as of Monday, May 5, 2025, are as follows:

Arabica Parchment: ₹26,500 – ₹27,800 per 50 kg

Arabica Cherry: ₹14,800 – ₹16,600 per 50 kg

Robusta Cherry: ₹11,800 – ₹12,800 per 50 kg

Robusta Parchment: ₹21,000 – ₹22,200 per 50 kg

Pepper: ₹730 per kg

Kodagu

Kodagu, the largest coffee-producing district in Karnataka, contributes over one-third of India’s total coffee output. The region predominantly cultivates Robusta coffee, although Arabica is also grown in higher elevations. With its unique microclimate and terrain, Kodagu is home to thousands of small and medium coffee growers, many of whom also intercrop with pepper and cardamom.

Chikkamagaluru

Known as the birthplace of coffee in India, Chikkamagaluru is famous for its high-elevation Arabica plantations. The district’s coffee estates are spread across the Western Ghats, and the beans grown here are renowned for their aroma and acidity. Arabica Parchment is widely cultivated, with many growers also exporting specialty coffee to international markets.

Sakleshpura(Hassan district)

Located in the Hassan district, Sakleshpura is another key coffee-growing area in Karnataka. The region primarily produces Arabica Cherry and Robusta Cherry. The moderate climate and abundant rainfall in Sakleshpura make it suitable for quality coffee production, often intercropped with pepper, which is also a major revenue source for planters here.

Karnataka

Karnataka remains India’s largest coffee-producing state, accounting for over 70% of the country’s coffee output. The state’s plantations grow both Arabica and Robusta varieties, supported by ideal climatic conditions in districts like Kodagu, Chikkamagaluru, and Hassan. Karnataka also leads in post-harvest processing and coffee exports.

India

India ranks among the top ten coffee-producing countries in the world. While the southern states dominate production, Karnataka plays the most significant role. The country grows roughly 65% Robusta and 35% Arabica. Indian coffee is valued in global markets for its mild flavour and low acidity, and much of it is shade-grown under natural forest canopies.

Pepper

Pepper continues to be a vital intercrop in Karnataka’s coffee plantations. On May 5, 2025, the price of pepper was recorded at ₹730 per kg. Pepper cultivation supports additional income for growers, particularly in hilly regions like Kodagu and Sakleshpura, where the crop thrives under coffee shade.
