Coffee Plantations in Karnataka: A Snapshot
Karnataka is India’s leading coffee-producing state, accounting for over 70% of the country’s total output. The districts of Kodagu (Coorg), Chikkamagaluru, and Hassan form the core of this coffee belt, nestled along the biodiverse slopes of the Western Ghats.
Kodagu, also known as Coorg, is the largest coffee-producing district in India. Most estates here are family-run and combine coffee with pepper, cardamom, and areca nut cultivation. Arabica and Robusta varieties are both grown, with Robusta dominating the lower elevations. The region is known for its shade-grown coffee, cultivated under dense forest canopies that also provide habitat to diverse flora and fauna.
Chikkamagaluru holds historic significance as the birthplace of coffee in India, where the first beans were introduced in the 17th century. Arabica thrives in its high-altitude estates, and many plantations here are over a century old. The region is known for its fine-quality beans, often sought after by specialty coffee buyers.
Hassan, though smaller in area, is also an important contributor, with a mix of small and medium-sized plantations. The district’s elevation and rainfall patterns support the cultivation of both Arabica and Robusta.
Despite fluctuations in prices, these regions continue to be central to India’s coffee economy. However, growers often face challenges such as erratic rainfall, labour shortages, and market price volatility underscoring the need for policy support and better market linkages.
