Madikeri: Tensions flared at the Maha Mrithyunjaya Temple in Kattemad village, Kodagu district, on December 27, when Kodava community members in their traditional attire, the Kuppiya and Chale, were allegedly targeted by individuals wearing saffron cloths and holding saffron flags.

According to local residents, the confrontation began when the Kodavas chanted, “Maadhe Pore Powodhi E Pore,” invoking God’s name. In response, the group in saffron reportedly chanted “Govinda Govinda” and allegedly did verbal attack on Kodava individuals. “This led to a ruckus and heated arguments within the temple premises,” said Sadera Ponnanna, a local resident.

The situation escalated when the saffron-clad group reportedly barred the traditional Thadamdu procession from circling the temple. They allegedly demanded that the Kodavas either remove their traditional attire or leave the premises, threatening to halt the festival otherwise, according to Ponnanna.

Footage of the incident has gone viral on social media, sparking widespread criticism of the alleged assault on the Kodava community. Several commenters condemned the actions of the saffron group, accusing them of disrespecting Kodava traditions and creating communal tensions.

The Kodava community, known for their unique customs and heritage, has expressed outrage over the incident, calling for action to safeguard their cultural practices.

MLA Ponnanna Calls for Peace

Virajpet MLA A.S. Ponnanna confirmed the incident in Kattemad village, describing it as unfortunate and avoidable. He urged everyone to maintain peace and harmony. “I have been informed that a dress code bylaw has been implemented in the temple. I appeal to the temple management to revoke this bylaw and permit traditional attire from all communities. Historically, traditional attire has been an integral part of the district’s cultural heritage, worn by various communities,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Madikeri Rural Police visited the spot and intervened to pacify the groups. Speaking to The Kodagu Express, a senior official from the Madikeri Rural Police Station confirmed that they had received a complaint from local residents about the incident. “There was a verbal altercation regarding a dress code. We are currently investigating the matter for further details,” the official said.
