Ponnampet: The Kodava community, a distinct ethnolinguistic group hailing from the picturesque hills of Kodagu (Coorg) in Karnataka, is known for its rich cultural heritage, martial traditions, and close-knit social structure. Over the years, the community has faced a unique challenge—finding suitable matrimonial matches within their community. This concern has become increasingly pressing as traditional avenues for matchmaking have dwindled.

In response to this, the women’s wing of the Ponnampet Kodava Samaja, known as ‘Pommakkada Koota,’ has taken a proactive step by launching a matrimonial initiative named ‘Thandh Bendu.’ This platform aims to serve as a dedicated space for Kodava families to find suitable brides and grooms within the community, thereby preserving their cultural identity and ensuring the continuation of traditions.

Kavya Somaiah Koniyanda, a key member of the initiative, highlighted the growing difficulties faced by Kodavas in finding suitable marriage matches. "In a general body meeting held recently, we decided to create this platform for our community," she said. "This will help many people who are not able to find a marriage match. We believe this initiative will strengthen our community ties and ensure that our traditions are carried forward to the next generation."

The Kodava community, while small in number, has always placed a high value on preserving its cultural heritage. However, as younger generations migrate to urban areas and beyond for education and employment, finding a compatible match within the community has become increasingly challenging. ‘Thandh Bendh’ is seen as a timely intervention to address these challenges.

Kalimada Motaiah, President of the Ponnampet Kodava Samaja, expressed his support for the initiative and emphasized the importance of women's active participation in community affairs. "Women should not be limited to the kitchen but should come to the mainstream of society, grow themselves, grow the community, and be the strength of the society," he said.
