Kodagu’s first female newspaper editor, journalist Jayalakshmi Govindarao passes away at 93

Virajpet: Jayalakshmi Govindarao, aged 93, founder of the 'Rashtramata' weekly newspaper and the first female newspaper editor in Kodagu district, passed away on Tuesday.


Jayalakshmi Govindarao passed away at her residence on Jain Street in Virajpet, as confirmed by her family. She is survived by three sons, one daughter, and numerous relatives and friends, according to a report in the Star of Mysore.



Jayalakshmi founded the ‘Rashtramatha’ weekly in 1974 and served as its editor. She was also the President of the Virajpet Mahila Samaja and an active member of the Congress party.


Her last rites were held at the Ursunagar Burial Grounds in the town, as per reports.
