MADIKERI: Kodagu district witnessed an unusually wet May this year, receiving nearly three times more rainfall than normal — the highest in the past 15 years for this month.

Though the monsoon in this hill district of Karnataka typically sets in by late May or the first week of June, an early onset this year triggered intense downpours across various taluks. According to a Prajavani report, Kodagu was facing a 44% rainfall deficit until May 13. However, sustained heavy rains in the latter half of the month reversed the situation, resulting in 340% excess rainfall.

The rainfall data from different parts of the district shows how widespread and intense the showers have been. Madikeri, which normally receives 14 cm of rainfall in May, recorded 71 cm, marking a 407% increase. Somwarpet saw 54 cm of rain against the usual 10 cm — a 440% rise. In Virajpet, the rainfall touched 59 cm, compared to the normal 15 cm, indicating a 286% increase. Similarly, Kushalnagar received 43 cm, more than four times its average of 10 cm (305% above normal), while Suntikoppa recorded 58 cm against the usual 13 cm, which is 324% excess.

While the downpour has brought some respite to farmers and helped fill reservoirs, it has also raised concerns over landslides and flooding in the hilly terrain. With the southwest monsoon just beginning, district administration should keep a close watch on residents in vulnerable areas to stay alert, say residents.
