Kushalnagar: In a crackdown aimed at improving road safety, the Kodagu police have taken action against tipper trucks transporting crushed stones, locally referred to as jelly stones, for causing hazardous conditions on public roads.
The move follows multiple complaints received by the Kushalnagar Traffic police about trucks carrying such materials without adequate safeguards, resulting in stones falling onto the roadway. This, in turn, has posed a serious risk to motorists, particularly two-wheeler riders, and has been linked to several minor accidents.
Acting on these inputs, the police seized three tipper trucks and registered individual cases against them under Section 281 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Section 177 of the Indian Motor Vehicles (IMV) Act. In addition, penalties were imposed on seven other vehicles found violating norms.
According to the police, the vehicles were not adhering to permit conditions, as they had failed to implement necessary safety measures to prevent the spillage of construction materials. The falling stones not only created dangerous driving conditions but also put the safety of other road users at risk.
Officials have warned that such violations will attract strict enforcement in the future to ensure safer roads.
