Madikeri: Kodagu district is not facing any shortage of fertilisers this agricultural season, and farmers need not worry about its availability, according to a statement issued by the Joint Director of Agriculture. The official clarified that ample quantities of fertilisers have been stocked and are being supplied to meet the ongoing demand driven by favourable monsoon conditions.

As of now, a total of 90,444 metric tonnes (MT) of fertilisers have been made available in Kodagu. Of this, 60,126 MT have already been distributed to farmers, while the remaining 30,318 MT are in storage across the district. The available stock includes 5,855 MT of urea, 1,643 MT of DAP (Di-Ammonium Phosphate), 5,526 MT of MOP (Muriate of Potash), 16,250 MT of NPK complex fertilisers, and 1,043 MT of SSP (Single Super Phosphate).

This year, the Agriculture Department had projected that 88,677 MT of fertilisers would be required to support cultivation activities in the region, including agriculture, horticulture, and coffee plantations. By July 28, fertiliser manufacturing companies had supplied 54,520 MT, with the remaining stock steadily arriving to meet the demand.

Sowing activities are in full swing in Kodagu, with paddy and maize cultivation progressing rapidly due to consistent rainfall. Out of the total sowing target of 30,525 hectares, sowing and transplantation have already been completed on 5,864 hectares.

Kodagu, a major agricultural district in Karnataka, is renowned for its coffee plantations, which form the backbone of the local economy. Alongside coffee, paddy is the main food crop cultivated during the monsoon.
