Gulmarg(Jammu and Kashmir): Bhavani Thekkada Nanjunda, a skier hailing from Napoklu in Kodagu district, secured three gold medals in the 10-km Nordic ski competition, 1.6-km sprint, and 5-km sprint events at the recently concluded Khelo India Winter Games in Gulmarg in Jammu and Kashmir.
Ms. Bhavani showcased her exceptional ski skills, shining brightly in the winter games. She clinched gold by emerging victorious in the 10-km Nordic ski competition, 1.6-km sprint, and 5-km sprint events.
Ms Bhavani told The Hindu newspaper “It’s all about pursuing your passion. A girl from Karnataka winning winter sports in Kashmir is enough to talk about my passion. We have no snow in Karnataka. I have to work harder than those who compete from the Himalayan States.
Ms. Nanjunda's introduction to mountains occurred when she successfully summited Mt. Rudegera in Uttarakhand as a National Cadet Corps member in 2014. In 2015, a year later, she dedicated herself to the freezing winter months, undertaking a basic course at the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute, Darjeeling, and ultimately reaching the summit of Renok peak.
Enrolling at the Jawahar Institute of Mountaineering and Winter Sports (JIM&WS) in Pahalgam, Kashmir, in 2019, she earned an international instructor certificate in skiing. By 2020, she transitioned to become a ski instructor with JIM&WS.
As per The Hindu report, she is currently gearing up for the Asian Championship and the Olympics. Expressing her aspirations, she stated, "I aim to represent India in the 2026 Olympics. India has never qualified for cross-country skiing."
