Madikeri/Mysuru: On January 28, 2025, Kodagu, the birthplace of India's first Field Marshal, K. M. Cariappa, observed the 126th anniversary of his birth with great reverence. Across the district, leaders, officials, and the general public came together to honour the life and legacy of the revered military figure who served as the first Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army.


The celebrations saw the garlanding of the statue of Field Marshal Cariappa, a tribute to his remarkable contributions to India’s defence forces. The event brought together representatives from various government departments, local organisations, and citizens who shared their respect for the man who played an instrumental role in the shaping of India's military history post-independence.

Cariappa was born on 28 January 1899, in Shanivarsanthe, Coorg Province, which is now part of Kodagu district, Karnataka, he rose through the ranks of the Indian Army to become the first Indian to take command as the Commander-in-Chief in 1949. His military acumen was instrumental during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1947-48, where his leadership was crucial in defending the newly independent nation.


His appointment as Field Marshal in 1986, a title only bestowed upon the highest military rank, marked the culmination of a distinguished career. Cariappa is remembered not only for his strategic brilliance but also for his dedication to the country’s welfare, and his ability to inspire generations of soldiers.


Across the country, similar tributes were paid to the Field Marshal, with wreaths being laid at his statues and memorials in Mysuru and Bengaluru. His birthday is observed annually as a day to reflect on his invaluable contributions and to honour the role of the Indian Armed Forces in safeguarding the nation's security.
