MADIKERI: With forecasts indicating above-average rainfall this monsoon, the Kodagu district administration has estimated that nearly 10,922 residents may be affected by potential weather-related disasters. Authorities have identified 102 locations across the district that are prone to landslides and floods.

In anticipation of the challenges ahead, the administration has readied temporary shelters for 2,953 families living in these high-risk zones. A total of 90 relief centres have been set up to accommodate displaced residents if required.

Among the vulnerable regions, Madikeri city accounts for the highest number with 44 at-risk residential areas, followed by 30 in Kushalnagar, 18 in Virajpet and 10 in Somwarpet.

To test preparedness and response efficiency, rescue personnel conducted a mock drill at the Harangi reservoir on Thursday. The exercise aimed to evaluate coordination among teams and ensure swift action during emergencies.

Officials said precautionary measures are being implemented across the district to reduce the impact of possible natural calamities.
