Bengaluru: Coffee markets in Karnataka witnessed a decline in Robusta prices on Tuesday 10 June, even as Arabica continued to command firm rates and pepper held steady.

According to Karnataka Planters Association(KPA), Robusta Cherry prices dropped slightly, now ranging between ₹10,400 and ₹11,200 per 50 kg. The Robusta Parchment segment also saw a modest drop, quoted between ₹19,600 and ₹20,000 per 50 kg.

In contrast, Arabica prices remained steady. Arabica Parchment, the premium grade, continued to fetch ₹25,000 to ₹26,000 per 50 kg, while Arabica Cherry held between ₹14,000 and ₹15,800 per 50 kg.

Pepper prices are at ₹670 per kg, with subdued trading activity in key markets.

Coffee heartland of Karnataka:

Karnataka dominates India's coffee production, with Kodagu, Chikkamagaluru, and Hassan being the key growing districts. These regions, located in the Western Ghats, provide the altitude, shade, and rainfall ideal for coffee cultivation.

Kodagu, often called the ‘coffee bowl of India’, accounts for nearly 40–45% of the state’s coffee output, primarily Robusta. Chikkamagaluru, historically the first place in India where coffee was grown, is renowned for its high-quality Arabica beans. Hassan contributes to both Arabica and Robusta production, particularly in its Sakleshpur and Belur belts.

Coffee estates in these districts also interplant crops like pepper, which climbs on shade trees, creating a unique agroforestry model that supports both biodiversity and farmer incomes.
