MADIKERI: Kodagu, also known as Coorg, has been lashed by heavy rains over the past 24 hours, marking an early onset of the southwest monsoon. The district received an average of 74.04 mm of rainfall by 8.30 a.m. on Sunday. Bhagamandala, the birthplace of river Cauvery, was among the worst-hit areas, recording 168.2 mm of rainfall in 24 hours.

Several other areas in the district reported intense rainfall: Kedmulluru (139.5 mm), Kadanuru (117 mm), Chembebelluru (109.5 mm), Hosuru (104.5 mm), and Gonikkopal (97 mm). In Madikeri taluk, Kasaba received 90.5 mm and Napoklu 72 mm, while Hudikeri saw 125.7 mm of rainfall.

The Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC) reported continued rainfall into Sunday afternoon, with Gonikkopal receiving 133.5 mm and Thithimathi 116 mm.

The rains have taken a toll on infrastructure — 197 electricity poles have been damaged, and Chamundeshwari Electricity Supply Corporation (CESC) teams are working to restore power. Uprooted trees and poles have blocked key roads including Siddapura-Kushalnagar and Kushalnagar-Somwarpet routes.

The IMD has forecast more heavy rains with winds in Kodagu and surrounding districts till Monday.
