Karnataka is India’s largest coffee-producing state, contributing nearly 70% of the country’s total production. The districts of Kodagu (Coorg), Chikkamagaluru, and Hassan form the heart of the state’s coffee belt. Among them, Kodagu leads with the highest output, accounting for over 30% of India’s total coffee production. The region’s favourable climate and hilly terrain make it ideal for growing Robusta, while certain high-altitude areas also support Arabica cultivation.

Chikkamagaluru, known as the birthplace of Indian coffee, primarily grows Arabica and is renowned for its quality beans grown at higher elevations. It contributes significantly to Karnataka’s total Arabica output. Hassan, meanwhile, produces both Arabica and Robusta and has been steadily increasing its share in the state’s production over the years.

According to the Coffee Board’s estimates for 2023–24, Kodagu produced over 1.3 lakh metric tonnes of coffee, followed by Chikkamagaluru with around 93,000 MT, and Hassan with about 43,500 MT. While coffee is the main crop, pepper is widely intercropped in these plantations, particularly in Kodagu, which is also one of India’s major pepper-producing districts.
