Heavy Rains Continue in Kodagu, IMD Forecasts Coorg to Receive Light to Moderate Rainfall for Next 7 Days

Madikeri: Kodagu district continues to witness intense monsoon activity, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) reporting heavy to very heavy rainfall in several parts over the past 24 hours. According to the daily weather report issued on June 17, Bhagamandala recorded a very heavy rainfall of 19 cm, while Napoklu, Ponnampet, Virajpet and Somwarpet received between 7 cm to 9 cm.


The IMD has issued a red alert for Kodagu for June 17, warning of extremely heavy rainfall (more than 20 cm in 24 hours) at isolated places. Sustained wind speeds of 40-50 kmph are also likely. The agency cautions residents about potential landslides, flash floods, and waterlogging in low-lying areas. Warnings are in place for June 18 and 19 as well, with the possibility of continued heavy rainfall and strong winds.


In its seven-day forecast, the IMD has predicted that Kodagu will experience light to moderate rainfall with sustained winds through June 23. While the intensity is likely to ease after midweek, isolated areas may continue to receive significant precipitation.

Meanwhile, the district capital Madikeri recorded 1 cm of rain in the last 24 hours with 100% humidity reported at 8.30 a.m. The weather department noted a rainfall deficit of 231 mm for the month, indicating that despite recent showers, Kodagu is still catching up to seasonal averages.

Authorities have urged the public to avoid landslide-prone zones and not venture into flooded areas. Power supply and road access disruptions are likely, especially in the hilly terrain. Local officials are monitoring the situation and may declare holidays for schools if the conditions worsen.


The IMD has also advised farmers to take necessary precautions to prevent crop damage and erosion in view of the heavy rainfall and runoff.
