Virajpet: Residents and health professionals in Kodagu district are raising alarm over the lack of adequate healthcare infrastructure in the region, particularly the absence of an MRI scanning facility in South Kodagu. The district, known for its coffee plantations and tourism, continues to grapple with serious gaps in medical services.

Dr. Bopanna C.S., a physiotherapist from Kodagu, has highlighted the issue, urging authorities to take swift action. “South Kodagu urgently needs an MRI scanning facility. The lack of an MRI facility is causing life-threatening delays in diagnosis and treatment, risking lives and losing hopes every day,” he said.

In his appeal to the District Commissioner, Chief Medical Officer, and the Government of Karnataka, Dr. Bopanna stressed the need to establish an MRI centre in either Virajpet or Gonikoppal. “Timely healthcare is a matter of life and death. Let’s come together to bridge this critical gap,” he said.

He further pointed out that the absence of such a facility is severely affecting timely diagnosis of brain injuries, accident cases, and other life-threatening conditions. “Establishing an MRI centre in Virajpet or Gonikoppal is not just a need, it’s a necessity. Timely access to diagnostics saves lives,” he added.

Although an advanced MRI unit was inaugurated at the teaching hospital of Kodagu Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) in Madikeri in September 2024, it remains the only such facility in the district. With no MRI units in government or private hospitals elsewhere in Kodagu, patients are often forced to travel long distances to Mysuru, Bengaluru, or Mangaluru for critical scans.
