Madikeri: Forest personnel at the Maldare–Lingapura check-post in Kodagu district uncovered the body of a woman during a routine inspection late on Friday, prompting a police investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death.
Officials stopped a Haryana-registered car at night and questioned its three male occupants, who reportedly told staff that the woman travelling with them was asleep. However, their inconsistent responses and suspicious conduct led Forest personnel to carry out a detailed inspection of the vehicle. During the search, officers discovered that the woman was already dead.
The deceased has been identified as 45-year-old Nanki Devi, originally from Haryana and currently residing in Mysuru with her husband.
Following the discovery, Siddapur Police Station Inspector reached the spot and took the three men into custody for questioning. Police sources said the manner in which the body was being transported has raised serious doubts, and a case has been registered to determine the cause and nature of death.

Kodagu Superintendent of Police K. Ramarajan, as quoted in the SOM report, said on Saturday afternoon that it is premature to draw conclusions about whether the death involves foul play. The body has been shifted for a post-mortem examination, the findings of which are expected to shed clarity on the case.
Siddapur police are continuing their investigation and are verifying the statements of the detained individuals.
