Ponnampet: Four Bangladeshi nationals, including two children, were taken into custody at Balele village in Ponnampet taluk of Kodagu district following an inquiry into their identity and movements, police said.

The four have been identified as Mohammed Sujan (32), Sonia Akhtar (28), and their two children. Police investigations confirmed that the family members are Bangladeshi citizens.

According to the police as stated in the DH report, the family arrived in Bengaluru via Kolkata around two years ago and worked there. About one-and-a-half months ago, they moved to Balele village and began working on plantations.

Their movements raised suspicions among local residents, who questioned them. During the subsequent inquiry, the family reportedly disclosed that they had come from Bangladesh. They were later taken into custody, and further investigation indicated that they had allegedly entered the country without legal authorisation.

Police have initiated legal proceedings and said the family would soon be handed over to the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) in Bengaluru.

Officials said no evidence had been found so far linking the four to any illegal activities apart from their alleged unauthorised entry into India. Preliminary findings suggest that they had travelled to the area in search of work and that a person from Assam had brought them to Balele.

Police are continuing their investigation to identify the people involved in bringing the family to the village and determine the circumstances surrounding their entry into the country.
