Football, Hockey and Cricket Tournaments to Energise Kodagu in April

The much-anticipated Mukkatira (Devanageri) Kodava Football Cup will be held from April 7 at the Althon Turf Ground in Gonikoppal.

Madikeri: April is set to be a vibrant month for sports in Kodagu, with a series of tournaments and community events lined up across the district, drawing participation from Kodava families and sports enthusiasts.

The much-anticipated Mukkatira (Devanageri) Kodava Football Cup will be held from April 7 at the Althon Turf Ground in Gonikoppal. Organised for the fifth consecutive year, the tournament will be hosted by the Mukkatira (Devanageri) Kodava family. Played in a 5-a-side format, the event aims to strengthen community bonds, taking inspiration from the popular Kodava Hockey Festival.

Last year’s edition saw participation from 74 Kodava families, and organisers are expecting over 100 teams this year. A sum of more than ₹25 lakh is being spent on hosting the tournament, with winning teams set to receive trophies and cash prizes. Apart from football matches, the event will also feature cultural programmes and traditional rituals, said Mukkatira Kishan Karumbaiah, president of the organising committee.

Meanwhile, the Chenanda Kodava Family Hockey Festival, one of the largest family-based hockey tournaments in the world, will commence on April 5 and continue until May 2 at the General K.S. Thimayya Stadium in Napoklu.

In addition to these events, leather ball Kodava cricket tournaments are also scheduled during the month, making April a celebration of sports and tradition in Kodagu.
