Kodagu’s Poovamma Receives Warm Welcome in Mangaluru After Asian Games Gold
Mangaluru: Mangaluru International Airport witnessed a warm reception on Friday as Kodagu-born athlete Machettira Raju Poovamma returned to the city following her gold-medal-winning performance at the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya.
Poovamma was welcomed with enthusiasm by members of Mangaluru’s sporting community, who gathered at the airport to celebrate her achievement. Accompanied by her family, the athlete expressed gratitude to her parents, brother and coach, crediting their support for her success. She also thanked the city’s sporting fraternity for the affection and encouragement extended to her.
A specialist in the 400m event and relay races, Poovamma has now secured four Asian Games gold medals in the women’s 4x400m relay, achieved across four editions of the continental sporting event.
A native of Kodagu, Poovamma is the daughter of M.G. Raju and Jaji. She received the Arjuna Award in 2015 in recognition of her contribution to Indian athletics. She pursued her Bachelor’s degree in Business Management at SDM College of Business Management in Mangaluru.
Her latest triumph in Aichi-Nagoya adds another milestone to a distinguished international career and highlights the contribution of athletes from Karnataka to India’s success on the Asian Games stage.
