Madikeri: In a first for Kodagu district, police have registered two cases under the Karnataka Control of Organised Crimes Act (KCOCA) and arrested three persons, signalling a tougher crackdown on habitual offenders and organised criminal activities.

Addressing a press conference in Madikeri on Tuesday, Kodagu Superintendent of Police R.N. Bindu Mani said KCOCA cases had been booked against two rowdy-sheeters, Pramod and Darshan, at the Madikeri Town Police Station. The stringent law has been invoked against them due to their repeated involvement in serious criminal activities.

According to the Bindu Mani, Pramod has 18 criminal cases registered against him, while Darshan has nine. Both were jointly involved in nine cases. Considering their continued criminal activities and criminal records, police registered KCOCA cases against them. The accused are currently in judicial custody.

In a separate case, a KCOCA case has been registered against Sharif under the jurisdiction of the Kushalnagar Town Police Station. Sharif has been listed as a rowdy-sheeter for the past 10 years and has 11 cases registered against him. As he continued to engage in criminal activities despite previous action, police invoked the provisions of KCOCA against him, the SP said.

Bindu Mani warned that strict measures would be taken against those involved in rowdy and organised criminal activities. She said police would closely monitor the activities of rowdy-sheeters and would not hesitate to invoke stringent laws against repeat offenders.

“If rowdy-sheeters continue to engage in their old criminal activities, similar action will be initiated against them,” she said.

The SP also highlighted the district police’s efforts to combat drug-related offences. She said two persons had been detained under the Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (PIT NDPS) Act.

A total of 215 NDPS cases have been registered in the district so far this year, including 38 cases against drug peddlers. Ashraf, a repeat drug peddler, has been booked under the PIT NDPS Act and lodged in Ballari jail. Another accused, Musif, who has been involved in eight NDPS cases, has also been detained under the Act and lodged in Kalaburagi jail.
