Dengue Cases on the Rise in Kodagu Amid Unpredictable Weather

Dengue fever is a mosquito-borne viral infection caused by the dengue virus.

Madikeri: Kodagu is facing a rise in dengue cases this year. The intermittent rains over the past few days have created an ideal breeding ground for mosquitoes, leading to a spike in infections.

According to a report by Prajavani, the number of dengue cases from January 2023 to May 2023 was 29. However, during the same period this year, the district has already reported 58 cases. The affected areas include Madikeri, Kushalnagar, Virajpet, Somwarpet, and Shanivarasanthe.

Dengue fever is a mosquito-borne viral infection caused by the dengue virus. It is transmitted by female mosquitoes mainly of the species Aedes aegypti and, to a lesser extent, Aedes albopictus. The infection causes flu-like symptoms and occasionally develops into severe dengue, also known as dengue hemorrhagic fever, which can be lethal.

Symptoms of Dengue

- High fever

- Severe headache

- Pain behind the eyes

- Joint and muscle pain

- Fatigue

- Nausea and vomiting

- Skin rash, which appears two to five days after the onset of fever

- Mild bleeding (such as nosebleed, gum bleeding, or easy bruising)

Precautionary Measures

To curb the spread of dengue, residents to take the following precautionary measures:

1. Eliminate Mosquito Breeding Sites: Ensure there is no stagnant water around homes and workplaces, as these are potential breeding grounds for mosquitoes. Empty, clean, or cover containers that can hold water.

2. Use Mosquito Repellents: Apply insect repellents on exposed skin and clothing. Use mosquito nets while sleeping, especially during the day when Aedes mosquitoes are most active.

3. Wear Protective Clothing: Wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants to minimize skin exposure.

4. Install Screens on Doors and Windows: Prevent mosquitoes from entering living spaces by using screens on doors and windows or keeping them closed.

5. Community Efforts: Participate in community clean-up campaigns to remove potential mosquito breeding sites and educate others about dengue prevention.
