Madikeri/Virajpet: Karnataka, the largest coffee-producing state in India, continues to dominate the country's coffee sector, with Kodagu, Chikkamagaluru, and Hassan being the primary coffee-growing regions.
The latest coffee prices in Kodagu(Coorg) indicate stable demand in the market, with Robusta Cherry EP at 485(spot lift), Robusta Fruit at Rs 112 per kg (spot lift), and Arabica Cherry fetching Rs 15,000 per bag.
Karnataka accounts for nearly 70% of India's total coffee production, with Kodagu alone contributing over 40%. The region’s rich soil, high elevation, and abundant rainfall create ideal conditions for growing high-quality coffee, particularly Robusta and Arabica varieties. Kodagu’s coffee estates, mostly family-run, have been cultivating coffee for generations, making it a vital part of the district’s economy.
Background of coffee cultivation:
Coffee cultivation in India dates back to the 17th century, when Baba Budan, a Sufi saint, is believed to have brought coffee beans from Yemen and planted them in the hills of Karnataka. Over time, the British expanded commercial coffee cultivation, establishing large estates in Kodagu, Chikkamagaluru, and Wayanad in Kerala.
Arabica and Robusta are the two primary coffee varieties grown in Karnataka. Arabica, known for its mild and aromatic flavour, is cultivated at higher elevations, making it more susceptible to pests and diseases. Robusta, on the other hand, is hardier, grows at lower altitudes, and has a stronger, more bitter taste. Due to its resilience and higher yield, Robusta dominates Karnataka’s coffee production.
Challenges and future outlook:
Coffee growers in Karnataka face several challenges, including fluctuating prices, unpredictable weather, labour shortages, and rising input costs. Climate change has also affected coffee production, with irregular rainfall patterns and rising temperatures impacting yields. Farmers are increasingly looking at sustainable practices such as shade-grown coffee and intercropping with pepper and cardamom to enhance productivity and profitability.
Despite these challenges, the demand for Indian coffee—especially in international markets—remains strong, ensuring that Karnataka continues to be at the heart of India's coffee industry.
