Madikeri: The Codava National Council (CNC) observed Pathalodhi — the 10th day following the divine pilgrimage Talacauvery Theerthodbhava — by offering Meedhi (oblations) and floral tributes at three heritage sites in Kodagu on October 26. The observances were held at the Mullusoge War Memorial near Kushalnagar, the Madikeri Fort premises, and the Naalnaad Palace at Yevakapadi village.

Led by CNC chairman N.U. Nachappa Codava, members paid homage to Codava warriors, victims, and ancestors, recalling their sacrifices and contributions in shaping the community’s identity. At the Mullusoge War Memorial, CNC remembered the valiant warriors who fought against the invading forces of Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan in over 30 battles to defend Codavaland.

At Madikeri Fort, members offered tributes to those who were persecuted and martyred under alien regimes between 1633 and 1834. The council described the site as a “symbol of the struggles and injustices” endured by the indigenous Codava people and sought divine strength to continue their pursuit of Scheduled Tribe (ST) classification and Geo-Political Autonomy within the Indian Constitution.

At Naalnaad Palace, the council paid homage to Codavas who were victims of atrocities committed by Keladhi and Paaleri rulers. CNC reiterated its demand that such historic injustices be formally acknowledged by both the Union and State governments.

Reaffirming the community’s animistic and nature-based beliefs, CNC highlighted that ancestor worship, spiritual offerings, and reverence for nature remain integral to Codava culture. Concluding the ceremony, Mr. Nachappa Codava urged authorities to recognise Codavas as an indigenous mono-ethnic community in the upcoming 2026–27 National Census and to provide them with a separate code and constitutional safeguards.
