Karnataka is the largest coffee-producing state in India, contributing over 70% of the country’s total output. The major coffee-growing districts are Kodagu, Chikkamagaluru, and Hassan, located in the Western Ghats region. These areas offer ideal climatic conditions—altitude, rainfall, and temperature—for growing both Arabica and Robusta varieties of coffee.
According to the latest update from the Karnataka Planters’ Association, Arabica Parchment is currently fetching between ₹26,000 and ₹27,000, while Arabica Cherry is priced between ₹14,000 and ₹15,100. Robusta Parchment is being sold at ₹19,000 to ₹20,000, and Robusta Cherry stands in the range of ₹10,500 to ₹10,850. In addition to coffee, black pepper—often intercropped in coffee estates—is trading at ₹670 per kilogram.
Kodagu (Coorg) is the top coffee-producing district in India. Coffee is grown across more than 1.25 lakh hectares here, with Robusta being the dominant variety due to the region’s elevation and rainfall patterns. Kodagu also sees significant intercropping of black pepper, cardamom, and arecanut within coffee plantations.

Chikkamagaluru is considered the birthplace of Indian coffee, with cultivation dating back to the 17th century. Arabica is the main variety grown here, thanks to the district’s high-altitude estates. Coffee estates in Chikkamagaluru are often spread across hilly terrain and receive well-distributed rainfall.
Hassan contributes to Karnataka’s coffee production primarily through Arabica plantations in areas like Sakleshpur and Alur. Though smaller in scale compared to Kodagu and Chikkamagaluru, Hassan remains a key part of the state’s coffee landscape.

Pepper is widely cultivated as an intercrop in all three districts. The pepper vines are typically grown on silver oak or other shade trees within coffee estates. Karnataka is the second-largest black pepper producer in India after Kerala. Kodagu and Chikkamagaluru lead in pepper cultivation within the state. However, growers face challenges like quick wilt disease, unpredictable weather, and competition from imports.
Overall, Karnataka’s coffee and pepper sectors are vital to the rural economy, providing employment to lakhs of people and supporting agro-based industries across the region.
