Coffee has a long and rich history in India, tracing back to the 17th century when it was first introduced in the southwestern region of the country. Legend credits Baba Budan, a Sufi saint, with bringing seven coffee beans from Yemen and planting them on the slopes of the Western Ghats in what is today Kodagu (Coorg) district of Karnataka. Over the centuries, India has grown to become the world’s sixth-largest coffee producer, with Karnataka accounting for nearly 70% of the country’s total coffee production.
Kodagu, often called the “Coffee Land of Karnataka,” is renowned for its sprawling plantations set amidst lush green hills and dense forests. The district primarily cultivates Arabica and Robusta varieties, with Arabica grown in higher altitudes and prized for its smooth aroma and mild flavor, while Robusta, grown at lower elevations, is stronger and more robust. The plantations are typically family-owned, passed down through generations, and often interspersed with spices such as pepper, cardamom, and vanilla, adding unique flavor notes to the coffee.
Chikmagalur, another historic coffee hub, is celebrated for its scenic hills and cool climate, ideal for Arabica cultivation. The region gained prominence under the British in the 19th century when coffee estates expanded significantly. Hassan district, though smaller in scale, also contributes to Karnataka’s coffee output, particularly Robusta beans, which are used widely in instant coffee and espresso blends.
Indian coffee is distinguished by its monsoon “washed” or “monsooned” processing, where beans are exposed to the southwest monsoon winds, resulting in a mellow flavor with low acidity. Today, Indian coffee enjoys global recognition for its quality and distinct taste, with exports reaching Europe, the United States, and Japan. Karnataka’s coffee belt, with Kodagu, Chikmagalur, and Hassan at its heart, continues to be the backbone of India’s coffee industry, blending centuries-old traditions with modern cultivation practices.
