Kodagu, often called the ‘Coffee Cup of India,’ is famous for its Arabica and Robusta coffee plantations. Arabica coffee, grown at higher altitudes, is known for its smooth flavour and aromatic profile, while Robusta, cultivated at lower elevations, is valued for its strong taste and higher caffeine content. Kodagu’s coffee estates often practise shade-grown cultivation, maintaining biodiversity and promoting sustainable farming practices.

Chikmagalur, another prominent coffee hub, has a rich legacy of coffee cultivation dating back to the 17th century. The district is known for its Arabica coffee, which is exported worldwide. Chikmagalur’s plantations, often nestled in the Western Ghats, combine modern agricultural techniques with traditional methods, ensuring high-quality beans.

Hassan district also contributes significantly to Karnataka’s coffee production. Besides coffee, Hassan, Kodagu, and Chikmagalur are major producers of black pepper, known as the “King of Spices.” The combination of coffee and pepper cultivation often benefits farmers through intercropping, as pepper vines can grow alongside coffee plants, maximizing land productivity.

India ranks among the top coffee-producing countries globally, and Karnataka leads the domestic market. The state’s coffee, particularly from Kodagu, Chikmagalur, and Hassan, is exported to Europe, the United States, and Asia, supporting the livelihood of thousands of farmers and contributing to the state’s economy. Alongside coffee, pepper production strengthens Karnataka’s position in the spice market, highlighting the region’s agricultural diversity and global relevance.
