Karnataka is India’s largest coffee-producing state, contributing nearly 70 percent of the country’s total output. Within Karnataka, Kodagu (Coorg), Chikkamagaluru, and Hassan are the three primary districts where coffee is cultivated extensively across sprawling estates. The state is unique in that coffee is mostly grown under a two-tier shade system, intercropped with pepper, cardamom, and areca nut, which adds to the biodiversity of the plantations.

Kodagu district, also known as Coorg, accounts for the highest share of coffee cultivation in Karnataka, with more than one-third of India’s total coffee coming from this region. The cool climate, sloping terrain, and rich soil of the Western Ghats provide ideal conditions for both Arabica and Robusta varieties. Pepper vines are also commonly grown alongside coffee plants in Kodagu, making the district a dual hub for both commodities.

Chikkamagaluru, historically known as the birthplace of coffee in India, is another important contributor, particularly for the Arabica variety. Tradition holds that coffee was first brought to Chikkamagaluru by Baba Budan in the 17th century, and since then, the district has played a central role in shaping India’s coffee culture.

Hassan district also plays a significant role, producing both Arabica and Robusta beans. Its estates, though smaller in scale compared to Kodagu, remain vital to Karnataka’s coffee economy.

Nationally, India contributes around 3–4 percent of global coffee production, with Robusta making up the larger share. Indian coffee is prized internationally for being shade-grown and hand-picked, often exported to Europe, the Middle East, and Russia.

Together, the three Karnataka districts not only anchor India’s coffee industry but also support thousands of families whose livelihoods are tied to plantations, processing, and allied trades.
