Madikeri: The Union Government has initiated steps to transform the historic Madikeri Palace in Kodagu district into a major heritage tourism destination, with plans for conservation, improved visitor amenities, and the establishment of a museum showcasing the region’s rich cultural legacy.

The development follows sustained efforts by Mysuru-Kodagu MP Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wadiyar, who had urged the Centre to grant protected monument status to the palace and take up its preservation.

In a communication to the MP, Union Minister for Culture and Tourism Gajendra Singh Shekhawat stated that the palace has been declared a protected monument under the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act, 1958. The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) is also examining proposals for the comprehensive development of the historic structure.

Among the key proposals under consideration is the establishment of a site museum equipped with digital exhibits highlighting Kodagu’s history, traditions, and cultural heritage. The museum is expected to enhance the visitor experience while promoting greater public engagement with the region’s past.

Mr. Wadiyar had submitted a representation to the Union Government on March 18, 2025, seeking protected monument status for the palace and requesting the setting up of a museum within the premises. Since then, he has been pursuing the matter with the Ministry of Culture and senior ASI officials.

Welcoming the Centre’s response, Mr. Wadiyar said the initiative would help position Madikeri Palace as a prominent heritage and tourism destination in Karnataka. He expressed confidence that the project would contribute to preserving Kodagu’s unique cultural identity while attracting more visitors to the district.
