Cauvery Theerthodbhava to Occur at 7:40 AM on October 17 at Talacauvery

Talacauvery, located in the Brahmagiri Hills near Bhagamandala in Kodagu district, is a revered site for Kodavas, particularly those in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.

Bhagamandala: This year's Cauvery Theerthodbhava will take place at the sacred Talacauvery, the origin of the river Cauvery, on October 17 at 7:40 a.m. The event, eagerly awaited by devotees across Karnataka and neighbouring states, will mark the miraculous appearance of the holy water from the Brahmakundike, a spring at the Talacauvery temple.

Interestingly, this will be the third consecutive year that the Theerthodbhava occurs on October 17. In the previous two years, the sacred event also occurred on this same date.

The temple authorities of the Sri Bhagandeshwara-Talacauvery Temple, who made the announcement, are gearing up for this important occasion. Preparations at the hill shrine will soon be underway to accommodate the large crowds expected to gather at Talacauvery for the event. The ritual is believed to bring blessings to those who witness it, and many devotees collect the holy water, considered auspicious, to take home for worship.

During the Theerthodbhava, devotees immerse themselves in the pond, a sacred ritual that is thought to cleanse the body and soul. The event holds immense cultural and religious significance for the people of Kodagu and the greater Cauvery basin region.

To facilitate the movement of the expected influx of devotees from Kodagu and neighbouring districts, the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) is likely to operate special buses to Talacauvery from Madikeri and other towns. Many pilgrims are expected to arrive not only from Karnataka but also from states like Tamil Nadu, where the river Cauvery plays a central role in the lives of the people.

The district administration is also expected to convene a meeting soon to finalise arrangements for the event. Security, traffic control, and crowd management will be key points of discussion to ensure that the large number of pilgrims can participate in the event smoothly.

What is Cauvery Theerthodbhava?

Cauvery Theerthodbhava is an annual event of immense religious significance that marks the symbolic birth of the Cauvery River. At a specific time each year, holy water gushes from the Brahmakundike at Talacauvery, believed to be the river's origin. This phenomenon, which usually occurs during the Hindu month of Tula (mid-October), is seen as a divine act, and the moment is regarded as sacred. The precise time of the water’s emergence is calculated based on astrological predictions.

Devotees from across the region gather to witness this miracle, as the appearance of the water is believed to bring prosperity and well-being. Many pilgrims collect the sacred water, which is later used in various religious rituals.

Talacauvery, located in the Brahmagiri Hills near Bhagamandala in Kodagu district, is a revered site for Kodavas and people of Kodagu, particularly those in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. The shrine complex houses a small temple dedicated to Goddess Cauvery, and it is surrounded by lush greenery, adding to the spiritual atmosphere of the place.
