New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi showcased India's rich coffee heritage during his official visit to Australia by presenting Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese with the Indian Premium Coffee Box, which includes coffee from Kodagu (Coorg), India's largest coffee-producing district.
Highlighting the significance of the gift, Union Minister for Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal said in a post on X that the Indian Premium Coffee Box celebrates India's diverse coffee-growing regions and the unique flavours shaped by different terrains and processing methods.
"India's coffee craft in a box! PM Narendra Modi ji gifted Australian PM Anthony Albanese with the Indian Premium Coffee Box, celebrating India's rich coffee heritage that captures unique flavours shaped by our diverse terrains and distinct processes. This gift reflects India's growing stature as a producer of world-class, sustainably grown coffee and honours the dedication of every grower, processor and roaster," Goyal said.

India is the world's seventh-largest coffee producer, with nearly 70 per cent of its output comprising Robusta and the remaining Arabica. Karnataka accounts for over two-thirds of the country's coffee production, with Kodagu district contributing the largest share. The district is globally recognised for its premium-quality Arabica and Robusta beans, cultivated under natural shade alongside native trees, a practice that supports biodiversity and sustainable farming.
Indian coffee is exported to more than 100 countries, with Italy, Germany, Belgium, Russia and the Middle East among its key markets. The country's shade-grown coffee is valued for its distinctive flavour, environmental sustainability and high quality.
Apart from the coffee box, Prime Minister Modi also gifted Albanese a vinyl edition of the iconic Colonial Cousins album. Released in the 1990s, the album brought together renowned musicians Hariharan and Leslie Lewis, blending Indian classical music with Western pop, rock and acoustic influences. The album became one of the most influential collaborations in contemporary Indian music and continues to enjoy popularity across generations.
The carefully chosen gifts reflected India's cultural richness while showcasing the country's excellence in agriculture, music and craftsmanship on the global stage.
