Gonikoppal: “Bees are very helpful in increasing coffee production; hence, beekeeping in coffee plantations is good,” said Dr. K. Sridevi, Deputy Director (Extension), Coffee Board Technology Evaluation Centre, Aruvathoklu, Gonikoppal.
She was speaking at a recently held training programme on scientific beekeeping and bee management at the Central Horticultural Research Centre, Chettalli.
Dr. Sridevi emphasised that beekeeping plays a crucial role in pollination during the flowering season in coffee plantations, leading to better yields. She urged farmers in Kodagu to explore honey production, as it would not only enhance crop development but also provide an additional source of income.
“Kodagu farmers should be interested in honey production. This will help in the development of the crops grown on their farms. Today’s young farmers need knowledge about scientific beekeeping. Hence, the Coffee Board is organising such training, which will increase honey farming in the district,” she said.
Highlighting the environmental benefits, Dr. Sridevi suggested that coffee growers in Kodagu adopt beekeeping as a way to protect their plantations.
The training programme aimed to provide farmers with insights into modern beekeeping techniques and their integration with coffee farming. Experts believe that promoting beekeeping in coffee plantations can not only improve agricultural productivity but also contribute to the preservation of biodiversity in the region.
